A Day at the SAA Centre
The students are divided into two separate sessions. The morning
session is from 8.00am to 12.00 noon and the afternoon session is
from 1.00pm to 5.00pm.
At the centre, the children are given the opportunity to experience
a) Individualized learning
b) Independent learning and
c) Small group learning
To be more effective, children are further placed into two classes
for group teaching. (The yellow class and the Red class). Each group
consists of about 5 children.
A typical day at the SAA Centre is filled with various activities
as shown below:
a) Greetings and Attendance
This is for 30 minutes and it includes
- Greetings
- Attendance
- Singing the National Anthem
- Brain Gym and
- Self help skills
b) Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Discrete Trial
Training (DTT) and TEACCH
The next 45 minutes is for the above methods. This is strictly
for “Individualized teaching”, i.e. one to one teaching.
Yellow class does ABA/DTT while Red class does TEACCH (workstation).
After Tea-Break, the groups exchange the methods used for another
45 minutes.
c) Tea-Break
After 45 minutes of concentration, everyone takes a rest for
30 minutes. Teachers and students have their refreshment. Students
exercise good eating habits and also have an opportunity to nurture
their social skills.
d) Number Skills
This skill is needed in everyday circumstances. We have allocated
½ hour to introduce numbers to our children. We are starting
with Pre-Number skills such as the concept of ‘big and small’,
‘long and short’, ‘many and few’, ‘full
and empty’, etc.
Gradually the actual number concept is introduced i.e. 1 to 20
or more for the able ones, addition, subtraction, time, money,
shopping, measuring, etc.
e) Interactive Activities
To further enhance the children’s potentials, we have
integrated other areas such as:
i) Art and Craft ( once a week)
ii) Fine motor skills ( once a week)
iii) Music Circle (twice a week)
iv) Outdoor activities ( once a week)
This is carried out as “Group teaching” for ½
hour. This brings us to the end of a session.
